Jack's Law

There is currently no automatic right to paid time off for bereavement. This seems surprising, and even cruel, given the problems facing parents in this terrible situation.  This appears to have been recognised by Government, as it was announced that from 6 April 2020, working parents who suffer a still birth from the 24th week of pregnancy or the loss of a child under 18, will be entitled to two weeks’ statutory leave. This will be known as Statutory Parental Bereavement Leave “SPBL” whilst the legislation itself will be known as Jack’s law in memory of Jack Herd whose mother Lucy campaigned for mandatory leave for grieving parents following the death of her son in 2010.
